2. Deborah Glorified God with a Song of Victory and Honored Those Who Meritoriously Served in Battle

Israel’s military power was no match for King Jabin and Sisera’s iron chariots; but through God’s intervention and providence, Israel gained victory. Deborah sang a song of victory (Judg 5), and it contained the following two main themes.

(1) She praised God because victory came completely through God’s help.

Although the Israelites and its leaders fought hard in the war, Deborah praised God and gave thanks to the God who had helped them gain victory (Judg 5:2–3).

God Himself came down in order to strike Sisera’s mighty army (Judg 5:13 NKJV). Using Barak, God routed Sisera, his chariots and all of his men with the edge of the sword (Judg 4:15). The word routed is derived from the word , which means “to break,” “to step on,” and “to confuse.” This means that God confused Jabin and Sisera’s army so that Barak could obtain victory. God sent torrential rain to create rapids in the Kishon River (Judg 5:4, 21), so that the deluge made all the land a large mud puddle with swamps to confound and mire the iron chariots, allowing Barak’s 10,000 men to attack and annihilate them (Judg 4:14).

Seeing this, Sisera panicked, alighted from his chariot, and fled on foot (Judg 4:15). All of Sisera’s men fell to the sword and there was not one left standing (Judg 4:16). Judges 5:20 states, “The stars fought from heaven, from their courses they fought against Sisera.” The “stars” here refer to the heavenly beings or angels.52 God sent His angels to destroy Sisera’s army. Later, during King Hezekiah’s time, when the Assyrian king, Sennacherib, attacked Israel with his great army, the 185,000 men in the Assyrian army were struck down instantly by the angel of the Lord (2 Kgs 19:35).
